Review/Giveaway: Steps4Kids Write Their ABCs DVD

My 5 year old son learnt how to write his name and the alphabet in all capital letters at preschool.  Now at Kindergarten he's focusing on converting to lower case.  Like most Kindergartners he forgets to convert to lower case and writes backward letters sometimes for s and 5.  While I have complete confidence in my son's teachers and know he will get it in his own time I still like to give my son a helping hand at home.

I was given the opportunity to review Step4Kids - Write their ABCs DVD, designed to help children ages 4-7 as a learning tool for handwriting. Steps4Kids to Write Their ABC’s was co-created by an occupational therapist and has won numerous awards including DVD of the year from Creative Child magazine. This DVD was about an hour long and in 3 tracks provided us with everything we needed in handwriting support.

Track 1: Writing Basics
While my son has been holding a pencil for a while it was good to go back and review his posture as this is the foundation to good handwriting.

Track 2: Upper Case Letters
This drawing excercise was interesting as the visual demonstration of letters were grouped based on stroke similarity and not alphabetically.  This makes sense to me and now my son has an easier time knowing where to start and stop the letter on the page.  The verbal cues, simple visual demonstrations and drawing breaks kept my son engaged in learning.

Track 3: Lower Case Letters
We liked the special section at the end to help remember how to avoid writing certain letters in reverse.

  10. I have 3 kids who could benefit form this. I have a teenager who has dysgraphia and is very visual, she wasn't able to write until she was 8 and still struggles. She may not like it, but watching it with her 5 and 3 yr old brothers will reinforce her writing skills. I wish this DVD existed and I knew about it 10 years ago!!
