My husband is the last of 6 kids so we tend to hold the family party separate from the kids party as its more manageable and the kids can enjoy family without having to split their time with their friends.  I usually make a crockpot dish such as meatballs or pulled pork sandwiches as guests can help themselves when they like and I can feed a lot of people easily and its friendly to my wallet.  Paper plates do not usually cut the mustard with wet food such as meatballs, but I don't want to pull my dishes out as thats a lot of clean up.
