Shrinky Dinks in 3D Review & Giveaway

I have an art cupboard in my kitchen dedicated to fun projects for the kids.  When the kids need a break from TV (a parent imposed one) they head to the art cupboard.  Kids these days grow up so quick especially with the so called kids programs on TV so stimulation of the brain with fun projects is a must to ensure a healthy mind.

 I was given the opportunity to review BSW Toys Inc. Shrinky Dinks in 3D Kit and thought this would be a nice addition to our art projects.  I have never heard of Shrinky Dinks but you might have from your childhood.    Shrinky Dinks are plastic that shrink to approximately 1/3rd their original size and actually become 9 times thicker when simply placed in a Home Oven or Toaster Oven for 2 minutes.  Shrinky Dinks in 3D are a fun, safe and non-toxic product that is also made in the US - how refreshing.

Each 3D kit comes with 10 Shrinky Dink sheets (5” x 8”), illustrated instructions and tracing sheets to create 3D creations.  Kids can use color pencils, markers and every color of the rainbow to create their own 3D masterpieces!  There are so many kits to choose from and perfect for playdates, Easter baskets and craft time.

     

 

We chose the military aircraft project for review.  My son is nearly 6 but did require some help.  I simply traced the aircraft template onto the opaque plastic with a pencil and helped him cut the aircrafts out.  Then, my son colored in the airplace using colored pencil.  My children were so excited to see how they would shrink in the oven but I managed to create all the military airplanes from the template before we attempted the shrinking process.

It was fun to watch our creation get smaller and smaller, it's so quick and easy to do too.  The plastic did indeed shrink and actually get thicker too.  Once they were ready I took them out of the oven and we pieced together the wing components to give them the 3D look.  We used 2 pieces for all aircrafts from the template which gives us the opportunity to make many more military planes.
