After I drop the kids off at school I like to listen to music in the car. Although my ride from the kids school to work is only 15 minutes its soothing to put some music on. I like all kinds of music - pop, hip hop, dance, country and classical but I confess I'm a tunes kind of gal, I filter the lyrics to my husband's dislike and head straight to the tunes. I couldn't tell you the title or the words to any songs but I know a good tune when I hear it.
I was given the opportunity to review Yanni's new album "Truth of Touch". While Yanni is not currently in my music list I welcomed the review because I am open to new music. Truth of Touch is Yanni's first instrumental release of original compositions in over eight years and is a return to the genre Yanni helped create and advance.
A little background
Yanni was born in Greece and is a self-taught pianist, keyboardist, and composer. He earned Grammy nominations for his 1992 album, Dare to Dream, and the 1993 follow-up, In My Time. His breakthrough success came with the 1994 release of Yanni Live at the Acropolis, deemed to be the second best-selling music video of all time. His music is frequently described as "new age", though he prefers the term "contemporary instrumental".
I liked the album a lot, I think being a tunes kind of gal helps. The music is peaceful yet complex with the rythyms he instills. I do agree with the 'new age' term but with the instrumental components added in it adds a new dimension that makes it modern. I went online and found some footage of his concerts and they do look pretty electric and I'm sure being their live adds a whole new dimension that you never realize on DVD.
